Ab Core Wheels!Admit it, you want it!

There I was this morning, idly checking out the latest and greatest of ab thingees, when lo and behold, I came across:

And you know, fitness without fun (ie, pushups that don’t end up being 500, or workout sets that don’t go past failure, or weight bars that aren’t unbalanced, or …) just ain’t fitness!  :)

Actually, I will admit Read more »

Adding sizzle to your elliptical workout

Precor EllipticalMorning,

Today is my lower-body day!  So I scheduled out the following to-die-for exercises for me:

  • Every hour or so, do 30 of my famous Killer Karate Kicks

Well!  Read by itself, that sounds rather boring indeed.  But that work out was for when I was at home - it’s very easy to take out 2 or 3 minutes an hour and get your heartrate up!  I neglected to mention:

  • I also indulged in 30 minutes on the Elliptical.

But not ANY 30 minutes with your typical ANY HIIT or otherwordly workout, oh no!

Because today is lower body, I set the resistance to 15 (it goes from 1 to 20 on the commercial gym-quality Precor).

Let me tell you, Read more »

Billy Blanks Bio and Taebo

Taebo!Morning all,

I’ll confess - I *adore* Billy Blanks and his wonderful workout called Taebo.  Here’s why.

True, it’s not real martial arts (I do Goju-ryu karate, so I know the difference) but!  Many of the exercises he shows does build great muscle memory as well as really cause you to work up a sweat.

That’s not all, of course.  Billy Blanks himself is a very inspiring man indeed - as a child, he was undiagnosed with Dyslexia, was the 4th child of 15, and lived in a high-crime area to boot.  You can learn more over Read more »

10 Killer Resources for Rock Hard Abs

Abs!So you’ve been hitting the gym and pumping iron and realize that yes indeed…your abs, they need juuuuust a wee bit more encouragement to amaze and astonish the entire world.

Well!  I have news for you.

Your ability to show off your rock-hard abs is dependent upon the lovely, ahem, covering of fat that might still be hanging around on your tummy.   Once that’s gone, you can indulge in execises to toughen and chisel ‘em up…but until that point, you have to focus on your overall fat loss on your body.

So!  Let’s first chat about ab exercises.  Forget the ridiculous machines out there like the Ab Rocket or Ab Pail or Ab Give-Me-Your-Wallet etc.,; instead focus on (get this!) what works.

Dance Dance Revolution for Family Fitness

DDR!Morning!

Yesterday was such a, ahem, ….unique!  Yeah!  That’s the ticket!  Unique! day, let me tell you.

Oh, why, I hear you ask?

For several reasons, actually.  See, yesterday the East Coast was hit by 7 feet of snow (okay 10 inches) which effectively made my beloved 2.4 mile circle walk something about which only insane foolhardy moms like me would attempt.    Luckily, common sense DID prevail…and I Read more »

What are YOUR excuses for not exercising?

No ExcusesEver have one of those days when your get up and go…got up and went, and was last seen traveling down the highway towards Antartica?

I sure know that feeling, and I’ll bet you do too!  Here’s what I do to drop-kick myself thru the goalposts of life - feel free to share.

1.)  The Exercises Will Be There Tomorrow!  So will my fat.  Next!

2.)  The dishes need sandblasting!  So does my fat.  Next!

3.)  The dog ate my elliptical.  Ah hah!  The dog wants me to run outside with him so he consumed my indoors activity!  Where’s the leash?

4.)  It’s too cold.  That’s why God made Florida.  Relocate.

5.)  It’s too hot.  That’s why God also made Alaska.  Relocate.

6.)  I just brewed my coffee!  And a wonderful reward it will be for me once I finish my exercise.

7.)  But…it’s coffee!   Yes I know, and it’s the beverage of the Gods, but still…the Gods want me to exercise.

8.)  And it’s hot and yummy and calling to me!  Listen careful to its siren song - I’ll bet it’s "Don’t You Want Me Baby" followed by "Remember My Name" followed by "After The Cardio Is Done."

9.)  You really want me to exercise, don’t you.  No, it’s not me, it’s Destiny Bashing At Your Door!

So….how do YOU deal with such things?  Remember…the only way you’ll lost weight and get into shape is if you turn the key in YOUR mind regarding a healthy lifestyle.  If you really don’t want to exercise, Chuck Norris couldn’t make you (okay, well maybe he could - just check the Chuck Norris facts).

But in the end, you’re the only one on whom you can count for fitness success.  So honor that.  And if you’re looking for great support communities, check out:

Take control of your destiny today and smash your excuses for not exercising.  Your body will thank you for it.

Enjoy,

Barbara Ling
