Dance Dance Revolution for Family Fitness

DDR!Morning!

Yesterday was such a, ahem, ….unique!  Yeah!  That’s the ticket!  Unique! day, let me tell you.

Oh, why, I hear you ask?

For several reasons, actually.  See, yesterday the East Coast was hit by 7 feet of snow (okay 10 inches) which effectively made my beloved 2.4 mile circle walk something about which only insane foolhardy moms like me would attempt.    Luckily, common sense DID prevail…and I forbade myself to go a’slippin’ and a’slidin’ down the Iditarod trail that was my street.

But!  An opportunity for extreme frustration set in!  How could I get in my daily exercise?

Oh, sure, I could:

  • lift weights
  • do karate
  • practice 800 martial arts kicks (that really does break a sweat, btw)

and other such nifty neat thingees…but then I realized my 4 kids wouldn’t get any benefits if I had flown solo.

So!  We hauled out Dance Dance Revolution and let me tell you - we all had a blast!

If you’re not familiar with DDR, it’s a dance-simulation game you can play on a playstation or xbox etc., and uses two mats that attach to the console.  Instead of using your hands, you use your feet!  You watch the TV screen and try to move your feet in the same pace as the arrows that fly by….to the tune of popular hits today.

DDR is not just for kids!  You can really get a superb workout with it.

Here are some of my favorite sites for DDR:

Now, if you’d like to get some customer reviews for DDR, you can check out:

When it comes to dance mats, I *highly* recommend getting the ones that are at least an inch thick.  We’ve been using High Octane mats now for 2 years and they have yet to disintegrate (the standard mats died an agonizing death after a month of use).

Here they are below:

In closing, DDR can be a great boon to helping your family stay fit!  More articles about that can be found at:

Enjoy!  And keep on dancing - it’s a superb way to get fit.
