A MILLION Glorious Painful Pushups!

Betcha that title caught your eye, eh?

If you’ve been around online for more than, oh, say, 4 seconds, and you’re interested in fitness and health, chances are, you’ve come across the site for A Hundred Pushups.

It’s a neat concept - it offers you a 6 week training plan on how to build up your body strength and be able to do 100 consecutive pushups in a row.  The program is broken down into 6 weeks like so:

That picture you see at the top of this post - that’s me doing my 7th batch of 50 pushups in the PA Train Museum last summer.  Yes indeed, when I’m in pushup mode, it doesn’t matter where I am - I’ll find a nice private area (or, in the above case, a place where I can embarrass my children) and bash out the required exercise.

My love affair with pushups started at my local karate dojo.  Back when I was still 30 or so pounds overweight, I was still able to build up my deltoids and biceps so that they were actually noticable and rather buff, I must say.  And one of the best ways of flaunting them (besides my beloved sleeveless camouflage gi) was to do pushups. 

Lots and lots of pushups.  I’ll admit it, I loved showing off…especially as the other students in class were:

  • 1/3 my age for the most part
  • Rather whiny when it came to pushups

But not the Lings! 

Me and me kids would say, Yay! whenever our sensei said, pushup time…and the rest of the class would look at us like a bizarre science experiment gone fondly weird.

But I digress.  :)

Anywhos, back to the topic of this post!  I had let my pushup ability fall by the wayside, so I decided today to start it up.  And because I’m a big believer in taking things easy (she said, laughing hysterically), I figured that I’d do only 30 pushups an hour…for 10 hours.

I just finished my last batch, giving me a total of 300 pushups today.

Now, before you say, "But jeepers Barbara, that’s not consecutive!", allow me to answer - Ya think?  :)  Since I’m just starting out again, I’m in no hurry - I’ll give my arms time to develop the muscles they need to build up to the 100 pushups some time in the future.

Oh, and yes, I’ll admit, 300 ain’t exactly one million.  But every little bit helps!

So!  I managed to complete 300 pushups today.  By my last batch, my arms were so exhausted I had to rest after 20 and then imagine bouncing unicorns and rainbow faeries and never-ending coffee and children who actually managed to keep their rooms  cleaner than a nuclear explosion and laundry that did itself in order to complete the last 10.

I’ll bet you know what that feels like, eh?  :)

In closing, I doubt whether I’ll ever get to a million pushups or even 100.  I’ll be happy to regain my usual state of being of 400 a day (50 per hour over 8 hours).  But hey…every little bit counts.  :)
