Ultimate post-workout recovery fix

Karate Kick

Morning!

Yes, I can definitely vouch for the following - it IS morning, and I AM in one piece.

Kinda sorta maybe, that is.  Okay, honestly, it wasn’t THAT agonizingly soul-searing, I’ll give you that.

Yesterday evening I indulged in my beloved Adult Karate sparring and let me tell you….character-building, it is!

You see, my colleagues are either in their teens and 20s.  If they’re in their 20s, they’re generally a 5th degree black belt or up; if they’re in their teens, they’re still more than 1/3 my age!  :)

Anywhos, here’s what happened.  Now, I’m in my 40s and about 3/4 the way to my black belt.  Priding myself on always walking the walk, I do karate with my 4 kids as well!  And because I tell them, sparring is NOT an option, you WILL do it and you WILL improve, I figured…I should walk the walk I talk as well.

So….Mom spars!  And while Mom is pretty much NOT the most competent person that has ever walked the planet and donned on headgear, Mom handles being pounded into the ground rather decently indeed.

Thus, I had 6 sparring matches - 2 of them against 5th degree+ black belts who make me work bigtime, 3 of them against teens who were pretty easy to handle, and 1 with a guy who is extremely, ahem, gifted in street fighting.  He was tons of fun; I was able to take him down via a mugger’s throw (yeah!  Mom rocks!) and (get this!) land on top of him instead the other way around (which happened last week.  Note to mom - don’t end up under someone when you throw them!  It kinda sorta negates the benefits!).

The opportunity for undying pain which came my way happened afterwards.

My body for some reason dislikes all the hits, kicks and punches, so I never sleep well after sparring.  This time, however, I figured….Jeepers Barb, I could take a hot bath when I got home!  What a concept!

And thus was born the ultimate post-workout fix -  a long hot bath complete with damask rose and sandalwood essential oils.

I think I stayed there for 15 minutes or more.  :)

Today, I’d love to say I woke up freshly alert with the stunning body of a fitness-model 20 year old.  Well, that part is rather close - I’ve in far better shape now in my 40s than I ever was in my 20s (‘course, I was a math nerd back then, but admit it - math nerdizing is virtually identical to fitness modeling)!  But alas, my left lower side wants to secede from my body bigtime.  That, coupled with getting up at 4am, has led me to realize there’s a second hot bath and a nap in my future.  :)

But wow, karate sparring sure is a great way to end the day!
